Farm to Table

Farm to Table

Making the most out of your garden or your local farmers market

We finally have our garden in and are expecting a bounty of veggies this year plus our hens are laying at their finest so we are trying to make the most of the season.

Hopefully between our chickens and our guinea fowl will keep our arch nemesis aka THE GRASSHOPPERS at bay. Yep, grasshoppers have been creating a headache for farmers and us small gardeners for the last few years in this part of the country. But we are positive since we have had more rains this year and our chickens are getting fat from free ranging around the perimeter of the garden. Also we have baby guinea fowl inside of the garden fence hoping they can do their part and they are not big enough to damage anything.

Ok didn't mean to go off about grasshoppers, I'm here to talk about garden recipes. And boy do we have you covered this summer with every email containing several recipes to make the most of your garden or seasonal fresh fruits and veggies. Plus several recipes for fresh eggs since we have our little hens rewarding us daily.

In most of the United States, Labor Day is the last summer holiday. The last 3 day weekend for camping, boating, picnics etc. It's where BBQ grills and smokers are firing up in backyards across the country. Everyone is ready to enjoy the great outdoors before Summer fades into Fall. And that is true in Texas but it's also the start of Hunting Season!! Usually dove season starts around Labor Day and there are lines at sporting goods stores for hunting licenses. Hunters begin filling deer...

It's about Mid Summer here on the Ranch. We have had more rain this spring and early summer than normal so our tanks (aka Ponds) are full from the runoff. Everything is green and our pastures and garden are growing better than we expected. It's hot hot hot and we are living per southwest culture, work outside in the morning, take a siesta and then back outside when things cool off. And speaking of working outside. Don't tell our children but we are continuing to use the bucket in our tractor...

Whoo Hoo! We just finished putting together our new Chicken House! Tractor Supply has this on sale over the 4th of July weekend and we splurged. Everything was perfect except we "almost made a mistake". We built it under the big carport for the shade and coolness and then we couldn't move it an inch! Yep that thing is HEAVY! Oh goodness!! Well the hubby always solves our little dilemmas like this. He used his car moving dollies and with the help of our trusty Polaris Ranger, (Gus) we placed...
