This year, the party’s coming early, so no excuses for skimping on the indulgence. We’re talking purple, green, and gold sprinkles flying everywhere, Jazz or zydeco music on repeat, and enough Cajun spice to make your taste buds do the second line.

The Hurricane is the undisputed signature cocktail of New Orleans — and its story is as fun and spirited as the city itself!
Back in the 1940s during World War II, whiskey and other spirits were scarce, but rum from the Caribbean was overflowing. To get even a single case of the good stuff, bar owners like those at the legendary Pat O'Brien's had to buy massive amounts of rum. So, the clever bartenders turned that surplus into a sweet, potent rum punch blended with fruit juices (passion fruit, lemon, and more), creating the now-iconic Hurricane.
They served it in a tall, curvy glass shaped like a hurricane lamp — and just like that, a festive staple was born, perfectly capturing the over-the-top spirit of the French Quarter.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces light rum
- 2 ounces dark rum
- 1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
- 1 ounce orange juice, freshly squeezed
- ½ ounce passion fruit puree
